Theory

Expendable vs. permanent moulds

Expendable moulds, such as sand moulds, are destroyed to remove the casting and are ideal for complex shapes and low-to-medium production runs. Permanent moulds, usually made of metal, are reused many times and suit high-volume production of simpler geometries.

The choice depends on the part complexity, required surface finish, production volume, and the metal being cast.

Common mould materials

Silica sand bonded with clay is the most common expendable mould material because it is cheap, refractory and reusable after reconditioning. Permanent moulds are made from cast iron, steel or graphite, which withstand repeated thermal cycling.
