Theory

Anatomy of a mould

A typical sand mould is split into two halves: the upper cope and the lower drag. They meet at the parting line. The cavity between them defines the part, while cores create internal passages and the riser acts as a reservoir of molten metal.

Understanding each element is essential before designing the gating system in the next mission.

The role of the riser

As metal solidifies it shrinks. The riser stays molten longer and feeds liquid metal into the cavity to compensate for this shrinkage, preventing internal voids in the finished part.
