Theory

What is metal casting?

Metal casting is a manufacturing process in which molten metal is poured into a mould cavity, allowed to solidify, and then removed as a finished or near-finished shape. It is one of the oldest known manufacturing methods and remains essential for producing complex geometries that would be difficult or expensive to machine.

From engine blocks to turbine blades and decorative hardware, casting lets engineers create parts with intricate internal passages, thick and thin sections, and a wide range of sizes using a single, repeatable process.

The casting workflow

Every casting follows a similar sequence: a pattern defines the shape, a mould is built around it, metal is melted and poured through a gating system, the metal solidifies and cools, and finally the casting is removed, cleaned and inspected.

Throughout this course you will explore each of these stages as an interactive mission, gradually building the knowledge you need to diagnose defects and complete a full casting challenge.
