Theory

From liquid to solid

Solidification begins at the cooler mould walls and moves inward. The first metal to freeze forms a fine-grained chill zone, followed by elongated columnar grains, and finally a coarse equiaxed zone in the slowly cooling centre.

The pattern of solidification strongly influences strength, hardness and the location of any shrinkage defects.
