Theory

Fast vs. slow cooling

A fast cooling rate produces fine grains and generally higher strength and hardness, while slow cooling gives coarse grains that are softer and more ductile. Mould material and section thickness control how quickly heat is removed.

Thin sections cool quickly; thick sections and the riser cool slowly, which is why directional solidification is planned carefully.
