Defect Analysis

Diagnose common casting defects and their root causes.

Section 1

Learning Objectives

1

Identify common casting defects by appearance.

2

Connect each defect to its most likely root cause.

3

Propose process changes to prevent recurring defects.

Section 2

Theory

Reading the evidence

Casting defects are clues about what went wrong. Misruns and cold shuts point to low fluidity, gas porosity suggests trapped gas or turbulent gating, shrinkage cavities indicate poor feeding, and sand inclusions reveal mould erosion.

Learning to read these clues lets engineers correct the process rather than simply scrapping parts.
