Theory

The ability to fill

Fluidity is the ability of molten metal to flow and fill every detail of a mould before it solidifies. High fluidity captures thin sections and fine detail, while low fluidity can leave the cavity partly unfilled.

Pouring temperature, alloy composition, mould material and pouring rate all affect fluidity.

When fluidity is too low

If the metal freezes before filling the mould, the result is a misrun (incomplete casting) or a cold shut, where two streams meet but fail to fuse. Raising the pouring temperature is a common way to improve fluidity.
